The 2010 Lewis Blackman Patient Safety Champion Award winners are: Jan Vick, a hairdresser from Chesterfield who turned a personal tragedy into a new role as patient advocate; Dr. Robert Adams, a neurologist at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston who is transforming stroke care across the state; Susan McWilliam, a nurse at Hillcrest Memorial Hospital in Simpsonville who is changing the way nurses are educated; and Dr. Mary Jo Cagle, who has brought national recognition to Greenville’s Bon Secours St. Francis Health System for its safety performance.

"It is gratifying to have a way to recognize the patient advocates who are working to make South Carolina's hospitals safer. For many of them, it has been a long, uphill battle. It is my hope that the Lewis Blackman Awards will result in increased attention not only for our winners and nominees, but on all aspects of patient safety both in and out of hospitals."

About the awards

The 3rd annual Lewis Blackman Patient Safety Champion Awards Program will recognize individuals who have demonstrated exemplary dedication and leadership in advancing the quality and safety of healthcare for patients across South Carolina. This award has been named in honor of Lewis Wardlaw Blackman, a bright, gifted 15 year-old who died following an elective surgical procedure in 2000 due to complications related to a medication error.  Helen Haskell, Lewis Blackman’s mother, has provided inspiration for this award through her tireless and meaningful work to promote patient safety and quality improvement across this state and nation. Nominations will be accepted and awards will be given in the following three categories:

  1. whose passion for patient safety has resulted in successful implementation of unit or system-wide changes that promote patient safety and quality improvement at the bedside.

  2. who are not direct caregivers, but whose vision, guidance and support have played a critical role in improving quality and patient safety.

  3. Individuals who have actively promoted improvement in the quality and safety of patient care in South Carolina from outside the healthcare delivery system, and who have been dedicated advocates for patient safety at the community and/or state level.

This award was established by the supporting partners of the South Carolina Patient Safety Symposium: Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC), PHT Services, Ltd. (PHTS), the South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA), along with Mothers Against Medical Error (MAME), as a dynamic way to celebrate the achievements of individual patient safety champions in South Carolina and to establish a benchmark of excellence in healthcare quality and patient safety for our state. Award winners will be recognized during the March 17, 2010 Patient Safety Symposium luncheon at the Marriott Columbia Hotel.

This official announcement of the Lewis Blackman Patient Safety Champion Awards Program includes an electronic nomination form and the submission requirements related to the nomination process.
