Captain Michael Farnsworth, after a courageous battle with cancer, passed away in February of 2010. Michael was a valued and highly respected member of our Every Patient Counts team. His dynamic leadership and engaging personality will be truly missed.

Michael was a commercial pilot and aviation safety instructor who led the crew resource management (CRM)/teamwork training sessions (held across South Carolina in 2009) as part of our Operation: Safe Surgery program. He was also working with individual South Carolina hospitals through his Human Performance Group organization on intensive in depth CRM training for physicians and other key clinicians across surgical and other procedural teams.

Michael’s positive energy and enthusiasm, and his passionate commitment to help hospitals and clinicians make the care environment safer for every patient has already impacted our work. With Michael’s death, we have truly lost one of the most dedicated and inspiring patient safety champions in our state.

In honor of his work JUA/PCF and SCHA’s EPC partnership presented his wife, Jane Farnsworth, a joint resolution. Mrs. Farnsworth was also presented with a framed copy of the Edge of Change poster and her son, Jimbo Robinson, shared a heartfelt thank you on her behalf. Mrs. Farnsworth was also accompanied by Michael’s parents, Bev and Joyce Farnsworth, as well as their other children, Alex Robinson, Caitlin Robinson, and Victoria Farnsworth.
